Certaldo

Wonderfully quaint and romantic, Certaldo is an authentic, superbly preserved medieval hamlet perched on the top of a hill in the Val d’Elsa region, 25kms southwest of Florence. Superbly preserved, Certaldo exudes romance as you walk through its small, cobble stone streets and original stone houses that open up onto hidden courtyards overlooking the green valley all around. Birthplace of the famous Italian poet and writer, Giovanni Boccaccio (author of “The Decameron”), Certaldo has maintained a deeply rooted poetic atmosphere and is an open invitation to journey back into a time of unbridled romanticism.

Overflowing with romance and poetry, Certaldo offers a wonderful, historical venue for your perfect Tuscan wedding.

Ceremony

Weddings are celebrated in Pretorio Palace (“Palazzo Pretorio”) which is a little gem of medieval beauty. Built in the 13th century, Pretorio Palace was originally built as the primary residence of the Lord of this area, yet the spacious layout seems to have been custom designed for magical Tuscan weddings.

Pretorio Palace boasts a gorgeous courtyard, adorned with frescoed ceiling and a beautiful ancient well. The back garden and the stunning views that can be enjoyed from the Palace’s main tower make Certaldo a unique backdrop when you tie the knot in Tuscany.
It is also possible to hold a Catholic Wedding in a nearby Church.

Please note: Today Certaldo is divided up into “twin towns”, upper and lower Certaldo. While the lower part is a small, modern town that lies at the foot of the hills, Medieval “Upper” Certaldo can be accessed by car through stunning, winding country roads, olive groves and vineyards or by an old funicular which leaves from the main piazza in the new town and gently carries you up the short hillside. In July of each year upper Certaldo hosts a fabulous, week-long festival honoring street performances and music. This festival has become very popular among Italians and visitors, and draws large, happy crowds who engage with the excellent actors and musicians as they perform in the streets and courtyards of this lovely, medieval town.
